What better way to explore New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes than fully immersing yourself into the natural world? Day hikes are the perfect way to enjoy the stunning scenery without committing to a multi-day trek, giving you and your team some healthy bonding time. This country has it all, from coastal views to volcanic terrain, so here are some of the best day hikes New Zealand offers to explore its glorious land.

1. Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Tongariro Alpine Crossing is arguably the most famous hike in New Zealand. Venturing across Tongariro National Park, this 19.4km trail covers dramatic volcanic landscapes, steaming vents, rugged craters and vibrant emerald lakes, providing the ideal backdrop for a group pic. The full trail is challenging, taking a minimum of 6 hours to complete with steep climbs and tricky terrain. If you’re after a more leisurely experience, the first 5.4km of the trail, known as The Soda Springs walk, provides a 2 hour return trip with just as much beauty. No matter which hike you attempt, they both offer surreal views and scenery, making it one of the best day hikes in New Zealand.

2. Roy’s Peak

Roy’s Peak is a stunning hike to discover the Wanaka region of New Zealand, only 1 hr 45 mins outside of Queenstown. The 16km return hike takes around 5-6 hours and is definitely on the strenuous side, with 1300m of elevation to climb as you scale the mountain. However, the effort is well worth it once you reach the summit and panoramic views of Lake Wakanda and mountains surround you. If you can face an early morning start, this hike during sunrise is sensational, with the rising sun casting a golden glow across the landscape. It’s no wonder Roy’s peak is a popular early morning hike and all round considered one the best day hikes in New Zealand.

3. Hooker Valley Track

If you’re after a less strenuous activity, but still want to bask in the beauty of this country, the Hooker Valley Trail is the perfect option for you. This 10km return trail takes you through the picturesque Mt Cook National Park, crossing swingbridges as you pass over tremendous icebergs and glaciers. You’ll be reaching for your camera around every corner as you wander through the majestic mountains, shadowed by the mesmerizing Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. This hike will only take you approximately 3 hours, making it suitable for hikers of all levels and perfect for a group of mixed abilities.

4. Cathedral Cove Walk

Located on the Coromandel Peninsula, the Cathedral Cove Walk is a relatively easy 2.5 km trail that leads you to one of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches. Taking approximately 1.5 hrs, this trail follows the headland from Hahei as it descends into Gemstone Valley, offering surreal coastline views on your journey. Venture through native bush before you emerge onto the golden Cathedral Cove beach; a surreal utopia of crystal-clear waters offering the perfect spot for a well-deserved, cool-down swim after the hike. There are a number of branches off the main trail to wonder different paths, providing the option to extend your walk and explore more of the surrounding pine forest and scrubland.

5. Rangitoto Summit Track

Only 25 minutes from Auckland by ferry, Rangitoto Summit Track combines the area’s natural beauty with its volcanic history. This 7km return hike starts at Rangitoto Wharf and from there will climb through lava fields and the world’s largest pohutukawa forest to the summit. Here, you will be rewarded with incredible panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. The unique experience of such a gorgeous hike so close to a large city makes this trail one of a kind, and is definitely worth a visit as a day trip out from Auckland.
